The aim of the cruise is to study the coupling between near-coastal physical and biological / biogeochemical processes in the productive and dynamic frontal area of the OMZ off the coast Peru. Specifically, the study aims at comparing the fluxes of nutrients, oxygen and organic matter to the biological activity. To achieve this we designed an integrated measurement approach target- ing the near-coastal oxygen minimum zone at 12°S off Peru. To achieve this we designed an integrated measurement approach using: (i) high-spatiotemporal-resolution 3-d observations of hydrographic parameters, current veloci-ties, oxygen, and chlorophyll using 8 auton-omous gliders and (ii) vessel-based, diurnal sampling of biological and chemical param-eters including experimental activity meas-urements at sites defined by the physical data.
This cruise contributes to the Collaborative Research Centre (Sonderforschungsbereich) 754 "Climate-Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean", which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at Kiel University and at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.
