From September 10 to October 5 the TAIFLUX project carries out its
third cruise to investigate gas hydrate dynamics off Taiwan. The
expedition is sponsored by the sponsored by the National Energy Taiwan and involves participants from Academia Sinica, National Taiwan University, the Taiwan Ocean Research Institute and GEOMAR. This particular cruise has two major objectives. The first objective is the
study of a erosional ridge on the passive margin of the South China
Sea to investigate to what extent the hydrate system changes along
the margin. The second objective is the study of fluid pathways
underneath a large mud volcano on the active margin close to
Taiwan to understand to what extent gas hydrate formation changes
the composition of pore fluids. These results will form the basis for
the interpretation of geochemical data. The main equipment used
during the cruise is GEOMAR's P-Cable high-resolution 3D seismic
system.
