Biological carbon pump & its sensitivity to climate change

  • Aim of the project is to examine the influence of changing environmental drivers (temperature, pH, oxygen) on vertical carbon fluxes and flux attenuation (as a measure of biological pump efficiency) using a global image-based dataset of particle fluxes from the Underwater Vision Profiler 5.
     
  • Global dataset of UVP5: > 8000 vertical profiles of particle size distribution from the sea surface down to a maximum of 6000m depth
     
  • Calculation of carbon flux based on particle size distributions
     
  • Vertically resolved flux data allows to compute attenuation of carbon flux with depth (”Martin’s b” or other measures, such as remineralization length scale, transfer efficiency…)
