Deep Sea Plankton Ecology and Biogeochemistry

  • In situ imaging for quantification of plankton biomass, species diversity, particle fluxes

  • Advantage of imaging methods compared to conventional methods (e.g. net catches):

• (a) high vertical resolution through small-scale in situ data collection (on cm scales)
• (b) non-invasive sampling (not perturbing or destroying target organisms, particularly fragile gelatinous species)
• (c) observations of animal behavior in their natural environment
• (d) automated analysis for increased data throughput (e.g. through machine learning and artificial intelligence) and thereby high spatiotemporal data coverage.
