Der globale Wandel beinflusst die Verteilung und Aktivität von Meereslebewesen auf lokalen und globalen Skalen, was erhebliche Folgen für die Dynamik des Sauerstoffs im Ozean, die Nährstoffkreisläufe und den Transfer von Kohlendioxid aus der Atmosphäre in die Tiefsee hat. Ich kombiniere autonome Kamera- und Umweltsensorsysteme mit modernsten Lösungen der künstlichen Intelligenz und ökophysiologischen Ansätzen, um die Dynamik von Zooplankton und Partikeln (Z&P) in einem sich verändernden Ozean zu verstehen. Zooplankton-Organismen spielen bei den genannten Prozessen eine wesentliche Rolle, da sie sich von allen Arten von Partikeln ernähren, Sauerstoff veratmen und gelöste und partikuläre Abfallprodukte ausscheiden. Detritale Partikel (z. B. Kotballen und zerfallende Phytoplanktonaggregate) sinken passiv durch die Wassersäule und stellen einen wichtigen Exportvektor für Kohlenstoff aus dem sonnenbeschienenen Oberflächenozean in die Tiefsee dar. Der größte Teil dieses so genannten "marinen Schneefalls" wird von Mikroben und spezialisiertem Zooplankton verzehrt, was zu einer Abschwächung des passiven Flusses mit der Tiefe führt. Tägliche vertikale Wanderungen von Zooplankton und Nekton vom Epipelagial in 0 bis 200 m Tiefe zum Mesopelagial in 200 bis 1000 m Tiefe führen ebenfalls zu einem aktiven Nettoabwärtstransport von Kohlenstoff, da das Zooplankton nachts an der Oberfläche frisst und tagsüber in die Tiefe wandert, wo es weiter atmet und Abfallprodukte ausscheidet. Diese Prozesse finden in einer sehr dynamischen und sich verändernden physikalischen Umgebung statt. Daher setze ich die erwähnten autonomen Systeme ein, um diese Prozesse zu dokumentieren und zu einem Prozessverständnis zu gelangen. Meine Lehraktivitäten zielen darauf ab, die digitalen und praktischen Fähigkeiten von Studenten zu entwickeln, damit sie eine bessere Überwachung und den Schutz der Ozeane realisieren und die nachhaltige Nutzung von Meeresressourcen entwickeln können.
