Abstract:
Understanding the effect of spatial habitat structure on population dynamics and diversity is one of the most challenging and active domains in ecology. Until recently, studies on dispersal or invasions have only minimally considered the specific structure of landscapes, while most natural landscapes are structured along characteristic networks, such as dendritic river systems. I will present results from a combination of mathematical models, protist microcosm experiments and large-scale empirical data on macroinvertebrates, in order to show how river-like networks are affecting dispersal, diversity patterns and community composition. Furthermore, I will elude how environmental DNA (eDNA) can be used as a novel technique to monitor diversity in riverine ecosystems. The presented work may help to better understand and protect diversity in natural metacommunities, specifically in riverine landscapes.
