- Innovation a widely used term, often with quiet an optimistic ´flair´ to it and almost always referred to and thought of as technical innovation. Nevertheless, the term Social Innovation has recently gained more and more attention within European and German political strategies in creating pathways into a more sustainable future acknowledging that there is a need for a transformation in social structures and human behavior in order to solve current societal challenges. However, although some scientific concepts of Social Innovation could potentially translate into a deeper transformation of societal structures the use of the term in the practical field varies a lot.
In this module we´ll have a closer look at the different concepts of Social Innovation (e.g., from a sociological, social or entrepreneurial perspective) and understand their origins and logics they are embedded in. Based on that we´ll explore the potentials and weaknesses of the concepts of Social Innovation when linking them with concepts of a socio-ecological transformation. We will dive into the question of what supports and drives the emergence of Social Innovation and explore the thought of Social Innovation Ecosystems and new forms of cooperation and co-creation among different societal actors.
In order to gain a good understanding of the topic, well not only study, analyze and discuss diverse scientific texts and political strategies, but also get to know critical and enthusiastic voices and meet some experts from the scientific and practical field.
