Inhalt
Economists often assume away the role of politics. However, politics is a central feature of the economy. First, because economic agents behave within a set of political institutions. Second, because economic agents often try to directly influence these political institutions for their own benefit (think about lobbying). In this course, we will study how political institutions and their actors shape the economic policies of states.

We will try to answer questions as diverse as:
• How do elections and electoral competition influence economic policies?
• How are economic policies influenced by lobbying?
• How does the wage of politicians influence the pool of candidates running for office?
• Is democracy a good thing for economic growth?

Course content
The course contains two main parts. Part A begins by discussing core political economy topics, such as an introduction to social choice theory and voter preferences (including Arrow’s impossibility theorem) and standard welfare theorems. It will further introduce additional topics such as electoral competition, median voter theorems, and the role of political parties and politicians in explaining economic policy. The theory will be complemented and informed by empirical examples. To this end, we will occasionally present smaller modules on empirical methods to ensure that students can understand the main results of the empirical papers that we plan to cover.
Part B extends the core topics and relates them to some of the modern debates and applications of political economics. For example, we will cover topics such as the political economy of long-run economic development and the political roots of conflicts.

Empfohlene Literatur
For Part A, the course will primarily be based on the textbook Political Economy and Policy Analysis, Merlo (2019). Routledge. This book is required reading.
For Part B, the course will also rely on Merlo (2019). In addition, we will rely on additional sources for specific topics. In particular, we will rely on the following books (which are useful but not required to complete the course). • Why We Fight: The Roots of War and the Paths to Peace, Blattman (2022). • Why Nations Fail, Acemoglu and Robinson (2012). Currency Publisher • Corruption, Fisman and Golden (2017). Oxford University Press
