Inhalt
Animal bones and teeth are abundant in the archaeological record, providing zooarchaeologists with a means to understand how ancient societies used animals to procure and produce food, perform rituals, generate wealth, and create durable socio-political relationships. This course provides a hands-on introduction to zooarchaeology through a series of focused lectures, laboratory sessions, and discussion. Students will gain a working knowledge of animal bone biology, learn how to identify fragmented mammalian skeletal elements using a modern comparative collection, and become familiar with ageing and biometrical techniques.Students will also become familiar with some basic quantification techniques and gain awareness of biomolecular techniques used to establish ancient animal diets and mobility. Focused seminar sessions will discuss the various ways ancient hunter-gatherers, agriculturalists, and pastoralists exploited animals in the past. Finally, students will put their new identification and quantification skills to analyze and assess a small archaeological faunal assemblage.
