Inhalt
Pits, especially storage pits and trash pits, are one of the most frequently encountered archaeological features during archaeological fieldwork. Regarding pits, micro-botanical remains (including phytolith and starch grains) can be used to reveal plant-related content inside the pits, can add information to possible plant containers attached to the pits, can reconstruct the whole life story of pits from their origin to their abandonment, and more importantly, can demonstrate the construction and maintenance techniques during the using period of the pits. The above aspects are all closely related to broader economic and social topics. That is, they offer a good opportunity to detect crop processing methods, food storage patterns, food preservation techniques, and labour and social organisation forms in the past. In this class, we are going to look at some archaeological pits from a micro-botanical view to see how `boring´ pits can carry exciting economic and social information!
