- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- Course structure and details:
- pre-course meeting in person at Geomar or via zoom (date tbd during summer semester 23)
- the course takes place as a three week block 28.8. -15.9.2023 with the following structure:
- first week: at FTZ Büsum 5 days 28.8. -1.9. 2023 introduction practical field and lab work, excursions; with lectures on habitats, biodiversity, methods and practicals in the field and in the laboratory.
- second week: anywhere 4.9.-8.9.2023 is reserved for a reading, planning and writing task (can be done at home or elsewhere).
- third week: at FTZ Büsum 5 days 11.9.-15.9.2023 projects, conduct, analyze and present your own research project (in pairs or small groups).
- written project report (most repost writing work could already be done during the second week)
- oral presentation of project

- Course content of teaching:
Current topics in Ecology of marine and estuarine fish (esp. life history, spatial and temporal aspects of ecology, adaptations to abiotic and biotic environments, effects due to anthropogenic stressors) - The role of fish in the ecosystem - Methods and design for field experiments - Fish diversity, ecology, and behavior - Trophic interactions, diet and feeding ecology - Variety of fishing and sampling methods - Methods for field experiments - Ecological laboratory methods - Collection, handling, analysis, presentation, and interpretation of data - Typical life forms and communities of tidal mud flats, salt marsh creeks and estuaries - Ecology and biodiversity of the Wadden Sea ecosystem.
Course Activities:
Experience the Wadden Sea - National Park and Unesco world heritage - Trips on research vessel EGIDORA - Try out different methods catching fish - Different sampling techniques for benthos (fish prey) - Tidal mud flat walk - Sample sorting, identification, dissections - Laboratory methods (otoliths, lipids, biomass, ....) - Planning and conducting experiments - Give peer-feedback and discuss ideas - Visit Multimar - Oral and written project presentation
