Inhalt
The aim of the lecture is to get an insight into current human geographic climate change research through jointly developing and applying key terms, approaches and methods. Despite the many attempts to establish climate change (also) as a political and social issue, most debates about climate change are mainly shaped by natural scientific terms and methods. However, models and predictions about sea level rise and other impacts of climate change deal with social, cultural and political aspects in a simplistic manner. The effects of climate change are far more complex. For example, “adaptation to climate change” has become a new imperative (de Wit 2014), which mainly seems to apply to the countries of the Global South and is often driven by western beliefs and within the framework of developmental aid shaped by western countries. The focus of the media on catastrophe scenarios equally sidelines the current realities of life of many affected people. Here lies great potential for human geographic climate research, which can question and interpret the creation, distribution and interpretation of natural scientific knowledge, as well as study climate change discourse, politics and everyday practices in a changing environment. The seminar will focus on cultural, social and political aspects of climate change on different scales and will explore the possibilities of human geographic climate (change) research in theory and practice. By means of the empirical research in the working group “Social Dynamics in Coastal and Marine Areas”, aspects, among others, from the thematic areas of climate change and migration and climate change adaptation will be addressed. In this manner, the issue of human/environment relations and global (environmental) injustice will come into view.
